About Mauka Career Marketing
Welcome to Mauka Career Marketing!
I’m Travis L. Scott, the Founder of Mauka Career Marketing.
Mauka was formed to fill a void that I saw in the world of coaching or consulting. A lot of career coaches focus on helping you land a job now.
They help you rewrite your resume and provide interviewing tips.
That’s great. There’s certainly a need for that. But what about once you’ve landed the job? What if you’re a year or two away from actively searching for your next role?
Wouldn’t that be a great time to start building your professional brand?
Wouldn’t that be a great time to build momentum and become visible to the types of people that could eventually hire you?
Wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to lead with your resume? That people actually could see how you think, what you know, how you communicate and proactively reached out to you about opportunities to join their team?
What if you could put in the time and effort now that would eventually render the classic job search irrelevant?
What if you could work with someone who has the unique experience of spending over 12 years in corporate recruiting and has hands-on marketing experience?
Great news! You can!
I actually have that experience and I want to leverage it to help others find a better path toward happiness in their career and work.
What is Career Marketing?
Career marketing is a term that a friend of mine came up with during a conversation we were having about our businesses and business models. I was struggling with what to call the service that I would provide.
Sure. It’s a form of coaching or consulting, but I felt it was more than that. A little different from a traditional career coach. I felt I have something unique to offer based on my past experience.
It’s different because I help you take a step back and apply marketing principles – the same things that companies use to market their products or services – to market you.
Having worked with hiring managers and recruiters at companies, both large and small, I understand what they look for, how they think, and can help you build insight and empathy around your audience – the people you’ll need to convince and impress in order to make the next step of your career journey happen.
What Does Mauka Mean?
Mauka is a Hawaiian word meaning “toward the mountain”. I chose this because I believe our careers are a journey, similar to hiking a mountain. There’s rarely a straight path to the summit. It’s usually a series of switchbacks, turns, forks, obstacles, and adversity. Decisions need to be made along the way.
It’s the journey that’s the most meaningful. Reaching the summit means you’re finished. Getting a new job is not reaching the summit. Retiring is reaching the summit.
Just like hiking a mountain, it’s better when you can do it with someone else. Someone who can point things out you may have missed. Someone you can consult when faced with a fork in the road or an important decision. Someone you can talk with when you’re considering going off of the trail and forging a new path.
As I mentioned, I have over 20 years of professional experience split nearly equally between corporate recruitment and marketing.
In addition to this consulting business, I’m also the Director of Marketing for a B2B company based in Denver, CO. In that role, I’m responsible for the development and execution of our marketing strategy and I lead a team of 7 people and an external consultant.
I started my career as a recruiter at a boutique staffing agency, later transitioning into the corporate side of recruitment where I eventually worked at Microsoft in Redmond, WA as part of the Windows team.
Eventually, the call of marketing was too much to ignore and I began learning as much as I could about digital marketing. This lead to me starting a digital marketing agency that was the springboard of my marketing career and opened the door to joining one of my long-time clients as their Director of Marketing, where I remain to this day.
I have an MBA in Marketing from the University of Colorado at Denver and a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Affairs/Environmental Science from Indiana University-Bloomington. I’m also an alumnus of several of Seth Godin’s Akimbo workshops including The Marketing Seminar, Story Skills Workshop, the altMBA, and the Creative’s Workshop.
Personally, I live in the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene area with my wife, kids, and our three dogs.
